‘The Earth has a fever – and that fever is rising.’ This quote from Al Gore in 2007 is more relevant today than ever. With global temperatures rising, buildings, especially in hot regions, are becoming unbearable places to work, learn and live. Air conditioning provides cooling, but it also drives up energy consumption. A joint initiative is tackling this problem with a simple idea: painting roofs white. The reflective coating keeps the interior significantly cooler. Measurements taken in 2023 showed temperature differences of up to 20 °C. Local craftsmen are being trained to apply the coatings using locally produced or available materials to ensure that the project can grow sustainably.
DER SONNE ENTGEGEN (Towards the Sun) has been following this story since 2023. Through interviews, observations and thermal imaging, filmmaker Martin Boosfeld captures both the simplicity and the impact of a project that brings together science, community and creativity.
Here, Martin Boosfeld tells us about the filming and the challenges it presented: "We used various Tentacle Sync products for the first time in the summer of 2025 while filming in Rwanda. We used SYNC E timecode generators and TRACK E 32-bit audio recorders, which we employed in various configurations for our setup.
We filmed with a very small team, and thanks to the simple operation and compact design of your equipment, we were able to have the entire technical audio/video setup operated by just one person, while remaining flexible enough to work with several people. Overall, the audio equipment provided maximum compatibility with minimal design.
Our main setup was a Sony A7RIV, which was supplied with timecode via SYNC E. A TRACK E with a directional microphone was attached to the camera tripod, while the second TRACK E was used flexibly for mobile sound recordings with protagonists, interviews or in hard-to-reach places.
During the first filming block in 2023, we were still working with radio links and had considerable problems with sources of interference on site. With the TRACK E devices, we were able to completely eliminate this problem in the second filming block. Another major advantage, especially for documentary work, is the reliability of the TRACK E. I can simply equip my protagonists with a recorder and be sure that the signal will be recorded. The 32-bit float recording allows for flexible adjustment of level values in post-production – a feature we have used many times with great enthusiasm. Overall, Tentacle products are a real asset to our technical setup.
We will continue to film the Cool White project, as it is also developing or being set up in other locations. The Tentacle devices will definitely be part of our equipment."
